January 2nd 2023 Outage

On January 2nd 2023 our Mastodon instance suffered a major outage for several hours. The entire server was unavailable including the web interface, API, and shell access via SSH.

Ping started failing around 20:45 CET. Rebooting the server via the hosting provider's web interface was unsuccessful and the daily backups were inaccessible as well, pointing further to an issue on tier end. Phone support was unavailable after 20:00. We notified the provider via email.

At around 22:55 the server was successfully restarted and service resumed as expected.

No data was lost.

Update: The server was unavailable again on January 3rd at 02:30 CET.

At 04:30 CET, connectivity was restored.

At 07:00 CET there was another loss of connectivity for about 90 minutes.
